Geoffrey Gabriel Family History

ITHACAN PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY "THE ULYSSES"

My name is Geoffrey Nicholas Gabriel and I'm In search of the Gabriel family descendants.
A brief family history follows that hopfully will assist readers to locate my relatives.
Grandfather - Nicholas Gabriel     Grandmother - Andraniky Gabriel
They lived at 28 ? Arnold Street South Yarra. Their house was called "Parthenon" and it was a few doors down from the Synagogue in Toorak Road.
My grandfather owned cafes in the city. One name that comes to mind was Heards cafe.
They had 5 children:
  • John Gabriel [decd 1957]  [my Father]   He married Elsie Frances Winifred Gabriel [nee Williams] they had 2 sons Geoffrey and Bruce.
  • Constance Gabriel he married Alma Gabriel [nee ? ] they had 2 daughters ?  They lived for a time in Anthony St Glen Iris. Con was a long serving member of the Prahran Club and owned and operated a Children’s knitwear Factory in Prahran. The last time I heard of Con he was very old and living with one of his Daughters in Queensland.
  • George Gabriel   he married Molly Gabriel  [nee ? ] they never had children.
  • Richard [Spiro] Gabriel  known as” Dick”  he never married
  • Esme Gabriel   Married ?  she had one daughter name unknown

My Parents are buried along with my Greek Grand Parents and Spiro [Dick] in the Greek section of the Fawkiner Cemetery
Bruce my brother died 2 years ago and he is buried at the Aberfeldie Cemetry [in the Victorian high country] He has 6 Children
I attended Mt Scopus College when it opened in St Kilda Road there were only 26 students for the first few years,
Later I joined my Brother Bruce at Melbourne Grammar School where I believe my Father and uncles attended.
I would like to know how and when my Grand Parents arrived in Australia; there was some talk about my Grandmother Andronicky being in Kalgoolie in WA for some time ?
I believe the Lucas Family could be related as Cousins of my Fathers?  Tom Gabriel the Hotelier was also possibly  related  ?
There is also aunt Katerinis home in Parkville which I recall visiting with my Father as a young boy.
I would greatly appreciate any information that can be passed on to me.

Indeed, the applicant represents a classic case of the person who does not appear to understand that the law regarding fitness to be a director is designed for the present and future protection of the public and is not intended to be punitive in nature."

"Mr Gabriel has shown and continues to show a lack of any appreciation of the duties of a director of a company under the Corporations Law."

The applicant stated in his oral evidence he understood that most unsecured creditors had been satisfied in full, in many cases by the provision of free air time. He provided no substantiation for this belief, nor is any apparent from the material before the Tribunal. The applicant was given an opportunity to call witnesses to support his assertions, but did not avail himself of that invitation.

He could not recall recent matters of simple provenance: e.g. concerning his relationship to various family companies, and whether or not substantial loans were made between companies. This cavalier approach was reflected in his demeanour in giving evidence and in his general attitude, providing confirmation that, despite extensive experience as a company director, he failed to comprehend the obligation of a director to ensure that at least the information about a company which is required to be on the public record, and to those who might deal with it, is accurate.

Gabriel v Gabriel [2005] VSC 158 (9 May 2005)

Gabriel v Gabriel [2005] VSC 158 (9 May 2005)

"In summary, during the course of the domestic relationship Mrs Oates lost all of her assets and her livelihood. Her assets were all lent to Mr Gabriel or one of his companies, and never repaid, or were used to purchase the New South Wales property in which he resided until it was sold to pay off the debts of Mr Gabriel and related companies. In one case, Mr Gabriel simply sold Mrs Oates' car without her consent and did not account to her for the proceeds."

"Mrs Oates purchased from Mr Gabriel a white Mercedes motor vehicle for $25,000. This occurred in 1990. In 1992, Mr Gabriel tricked Mrs Oates into signing a piece of paper and it later transpired that this was a notice of disposal of the vehicle. I received evidence that the vehicle was sold by Mr Gabriel to Chapman Motors for the sum of $59,000 on 9 July 1992. There has been a clear conversion of the motor vehicle, which was the property of Mrs Oates, and she is entitled to damages for that conversion in the sum of $59,000."

"It revealed that he stated as fact matters which related to his resignation as a director from various companies, and to his partner Ms H. Oates' position in them as director or co-director or secretary, with little care or regard for truth or accuracy."

Mrs Oates spoke of Mr Gabriel with bitterness and resentment, describing him as a selfish bully.

"Mr Gabriel received large sums of money over the years of the continuation of the domestic relationship which, apart from some contribution towards the joint needs of himself and Mrs Oates, was either frittered away in unsuccessful and speculative business activities and property acquisitions or else has been secreted away, perhaps overseas."
